Police are appealing for two witnesses to come forward after a driver deliberately drove a car at a woman.

The vehicle - a red Daewoo Matiz - headed directly for her stopping at the last minute. Officers would like to speak to two other women who pulled over to help.

PC Andy Banks of Accrington Police said the incident happened at around 6pm Thursday on Hyndburn Road in Accrington.

He added: "It would appear that this was a deliberate act and I would urge anyone with any information that they think could help to contact us as soon as possible.

"There are two women who we believed stopped and gave this lady a lift – they were in a black, new shaped Vauxhall Astra car and I am extremely keen to speak to these ladies who could be key witnesses, so I would urge them to get in touch if they read or hear this appeal."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police by calling 101 and quoting log number LC-20120808-1286.

A 47-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the offence and has been bailed pending further enquiries
