The cleanliness of Hyndburn’s streets has been recognised by a new award. The council has been declared a ‘four star’ authority by the British Cleaning Council in the 2010/2011 Clean Britain Awards.

This award was made following inspections of street cleanliness in the borough – with high standards found across the area.

Councillor Peter Clarke, cabinet member for environmental issues, who received the award, said: "It’s great to see that we've maintained the high standards since first being awarded four stars two years ago.

"Once again this award recognises all the hard work and dedication our street cleansing teams show day in day out working in all weathers.

"This comes hot on the heels of the recent survey on the front of the recycling collection calendars, where 81 per cent of residents confirmed they were ‘very satisfied’ or ‘satisfied’ with the level of street cleanliness."

The Clean Britain Awards inspection looks at the standard of cleanliness of external public areas and the exterior of buildings where there is general public access – such as town halls, car parks, main high streets, schools, and open spaces.

Randomly-selected areas are judged on standards of cleanliness of areas being inspected, litter and any other detritus, including chewing gum deposits, dog-fouling deposits and waste bin provision.

Among the comments made by the judges were: "The standard of cleansing presented was generally high with no significant problems identified. Accrington town centre main shopping area was found to be well maintained and no litter was evident at the time of the survey.

"In the adjacent area of the bus station again, the overall picture presented was very good, particular in such a busy area. Both the area and locality of the Accrington Academy and the Leisure centre at Church were maintained to a high standard, considering their heavy usage and presented a pleasant environment to users."
