Taxis stopped as part of a road safety initiative were found to have faulty brake lights, broken wing mirrors, leaking exhaust systems and dangerous parts.

More than 20 taxis were pulled over and checked by police, council staff and the Vehicle Operating Services Authority (VOSA).

Six of the vehicles were found to have defects.

Cautions were handed to four drivers for failing to have first aid kits or fire extinguishers.

Police also issued a warning after a driver failed to stop during the joint operation.

PC Simon Grounds said there are over 420 licensed taxis in Hyndburn.

He said: “This operation is all about safety, both for the driver and their passengers. Those drivers who adhere to the rules are being hindered by those who do not and who risk tarnishing this professional and essential service.”

Similar operations to last month's clampdown will be run in the future.
