HYNDBURN'S historic Haworth Art Gallery threw open its doors for civil wedding ceremonies at the end of last year, and since then two couples have tied the knot there.

Gallery curator Jennifer Rennie said: "We've always had requests from couples wanting to use the house and gardens as a backdrop for their wedding photos, so it made perfect sense to apply for a licence to actually hold the weddings here and supply the full wedding package.

"People nowadays are looking for something that little bit different and the Haworth, with its fascinating history and stunning setting in nine acres of grounds, certainly provides that."

Elaine, 44, and Bill Craven, 41, who live in Rishton Road, Clayton-le-Moors, were married at the gallery last October.

As the council's civic services officer, Elaine is no stranger to organising events, including the Mayor's Ball and the Freedom of the Borough celebrations.

She said: "There were many reasons why we chose the gallery, not least because it's in such a beautiful setting, but also because we were looking for something a bit different which would be tailor-made for us and our guests.

"The whole day was brilliant. Gallery staff really looked after us and they were helpful without being intrusive. We were able to have the day just as we wanted and it was really informal, relaxed and friendly in fantastic surroundings."

Ms Rennie added, "We pride ourselves on our bespoke personal service. We can tailor the big day to whatever the couple would like.

"Whether it's a small quiet service in the music room with a few family and friends, or maybe a marquee in the rose garden with harpists playing in the background, we can accommodate most needs. We will always do our best to make the day special and memorable, and we've had great feedback from the two couples who have tied the knot here."
