A DRIVER crashed into a maintenance lorry after travelling down a closed section of the Accrington Easterly by-pass.
Police said rods were sticking out of the line-painting lorry and they narrowly missed piercing through the 21-year-old man‘s body.
The Rover 414 was travelling on the by-pass towards Rising Bridge despite the fact the carriageway was closed for resurfacing.
The man’s feet were trapped in the wreckage and fire crews had to cut him out of the car.
He was taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital just after midnight on Saturday. He is undergoing treatment for chest and head injuries, and also has a broken leg, but is expected to make a full recovery.
Police said two passengers in the car left the scene prior to their arrival.
A pair of workmen were on the rear of the lorry when the car hit it but they were both uninjured.
The road policing unit is carrying out an investigation.
