A former Indian restaurant and working men's club is set to be demolished over safety fears.

Bosses at Globe Enterprises Ltd, which own the derelict Massala Indian Restaurant building on King Street in Accrington, said the site has become dangerous and a target for crime.

The site will be cleared over the next few days however there are no firm plans over what to do with the land.

Stuart Nevison, of Globe Enterprises Ltd, said: “I remember it at one time being a brilliant working men's club and it had some fantastic facilities.

“It was taken over as an Indian restaurant but that didn't work out and it's been empty for about five or six years now.

“It's a town centre site and people have got into it. We have just become really nervous about what could happened.

“The last thing you want are kids getting in and climbing up to the roof and stealing lead or slates. We just want to make the site safe.”

Mr Nevison said the building is now in a 'state of disrepair' and there was little prospect of selling it to potential buyers.

He said: “Unfortunately the layout and format of the building doesn't accommodate itself to modern trade and the sort of people we would like to get into it to reinvigorate it.

“It would be better if we had a clear site.”
