AMBITIOUS plans are in the pipeline for a major new complex next to Accrington's Asda store, transforming the site and creating hundreds of jobs.
Asda is also set to extend it's present store, creating 75 jobs.
The scheme, which will see several new units built on derelict land off Electricity Street, is set to inject new life into the site. It has in the past been plagued by flytippers and travellers.
Asda proposes to increase the size of its Hyndburn Road store from 42,500 ft to 52,500 sq ft by moving onto the site. Built by Barnfield Construction, the development will include retail, light industrial and business units.
Asda's plans also include the creation of a new access to the store from Electricity Street, including a number of entrances for cars and goods vehicles. Extra car parking spaces will also be created.
A company spokesman said: "Quite a lot of landscaping will be done including the planting of 22 trees. The company's plans have been around for quite a long time. We have outline permission to expand the store, but it will be really all down to the council as to whether we get the final go-ahead.''
He added: "Our plans to expand demonstrate our commitment to Accrington and our wish to invest in the future of the area.''
Around 400 people are currently employed at the Hyndburn Road store.
A Lancashire County Council spokesman said the existing traffic lights at the junction of Hyndburn Road and Oxford Street would remain in place whatever the store company's plans were.
Councillor Mrs Battle said: "Its welcome news because it will bring an end to problems caused by travellers moving onto the site and flytipping on this land which has been vacant for a long time.
"At the same time it will give Asda the chance to improve what is one of their smaller stores in the area.''
- Hyndburn Council's Planning Committee gave conditional approval to the creation of the new units off Electricity Street when it met on Wednesday afternoon. The plan, put forward by Barnfield, will include the unit Asda want to move into as well as five other units, providing a total floor space of 2,041 square metres.
