A surprise limousine ride greeted diamond duo Irene and Graham Evans on their wedding anniversary.

Irene and Graham, of Lancaster Avenue, Accrington, celebrated 60 years of wedding bliss last Thursday.

The couple met 61 years ago in Renfrewshire, near Paisley in Scotland after Graham, now 83, was staying with Irene's family while working in the RAF.

Irene, 81, said: "For our first date Graham took me to watch St Mirren. I was not really a fan of football but I went because he invited me."

Just 18 months later the couple were married and they moved to Manchester before settling in Accrington 50 years ago.

Graham worked with English Electric working on aircraft parts and Irene spent more than 25 years working for Lancashire County Council.

The couple have three children sons Gordon and Ian and daughter Sandra, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

And after 60 years of happy marriage Graham and Irene think they have the perfect secret.

She said: "Don't be afraid of quarrelling. You should always give your opinion and then let them have theirs. You quarrel but you make up and you should never hold a grudge.

"Never ever having a bad word with each other is a load of nonsense."

To celebrate their anniversary the couple were taken for a surprise meal at Northcliffe Manor.

And last Saturday they were driven by limo for a family buffet at their son Gordon and daughter-in-law Diane's house.
