Firefighters rescued a dog from a canal in Rishton last night. The distressed animal had been spotted in the Leeds and Liverpool canal next to Victoria Street at around 7.50pm.

Watch manager Steve Barnes said: "Upon arrival the dog was located close to an embankment with limited access. Two swift water rescue technicians dressed in dry suits entered the water near to the embankment to rescue the dog. Although the dog had a collar, no name tag was attached and local residents were unable to identify the owner."

The dog is currently being looked after at a local kennels awaiting collection.
