Dozens of pets and animals, including chickens, pigeons and a goose were stolen from Accrington in the last 12 months.

More than 70 live animals were taken from various parts of the town, new figures have revealed.

Among the creatures taken were 50 sheep, 12 chickens and a Yorkshire terrier, which was wearing a tartan coat.

The figures were obtained by the Observer through a Freedom of Information request to Lancashire Police.

The data shows that 50 sheep, 12 chickens, four pigeons, four dogs - including Staffordshire Bull Terriers and a Dogue de Bordeaux - a rabbit and a goose were stolen between January and September 2013. Across the UK, a total of 58,550 animals were stolen in 2013.

A massive 30,000 of these were bees, taken in a single raid in Mid and East Lothian, Edinburgh, last August. While Staffordshire bull terriers were the most stolen breed of dog, with 93 stolen from various parts of the country.

An RSPCA spokesman said: “The bond between animal and owner is often extremely close, and so it is understandably very distressing for those people whose pets are stolen.

“We would urge people to get their pets microchipped and to keep the details updated to ensure if they are ever recovered after being stolen, or even getting lost, they can be reunited with their rightful owners.

“If anyone does suspect an animal has been stolen we would urge them to contact the police immediately.”
