A YOUNG couple had to be rescued from Oswaldtwistle's Tinker Brook after they rolled out of surrounding bushes in the early hours of Monday morning.

The couple, an 18-year-old girl and a 20-year-old man, were lying in the bushes next to the waste ground opposite the Tinker and Budget pub on Union Road when they fell down a steep drop into the brook and were unable to get themselves out.

Fire crews were called to the scene at 1.30am and had to use a triple extension ladder to get the duo back up.

Ambulance crews took them to the Royal Blackburn Hospital for a check-up but they are not believed to be injured.

Andy Smelthurst, manager of the Tinker and Budget, who saw the early-morning commotion, said: "If the couple were in the bushes at 1.30am they must have been up to no good.

"They must have been intoxicated and they are very lucky not to have been seriously injured."
