A WOMAN who had her head shaved for charity is furious after an Accrington barber refused to give her a trim.

Eileen Allen couldn't believe what she was hearing when the barber at Cutmaster Swift in Warner Street said he could not cut her hair because she was a woman.

The 42-year-old, of Nuttall Street, Accrington, said: "The barber looked at me and said: 'I don't do women's hair.'

"I thought he was joking at first and started laughing, but he said again that he wouldn't do it.

"I said to him: 'Do you mean you are not cutting my hair because I am a woman?' and he answered yes."

Eileen, who shaved off her long locks for Macmillan Cancer Relief back in January, said she was particularly angry because she had been there for a trim twice before without any problem.

She added: "There is no sign up saying men only.

"I would understand if there was.

"I was keen to get it done because it was my daughter's birthday at the weekend and I wanted it tidied up.

"I couldn't believe what he said to me. I felt really low afterwards. I still haven't got it done because it has put me off."

Shop owner Julian Clayton said: "She wanted a woman's style.

"The last couple of times she came in she had her hair shaved on a number one or a number two, but this time she wanted it styling.

"We are a gents' barbers and there is a big sign outside that says Barbers. Blokes get turned away all the time from ladies' hairdressers.

"I am sorry she was upset and I apologise if she feels offended, but she has no need to."
