More than 170 homes were left without power when an electricity box exploded in the street.

Scared residents said flames shot into the air on Balmoral Road at around 3.25am on Saturday, March 2.

Firefighters fought to bring the fire under control following the explosion.

Bosses at Electricity North West said 175 homes were left without power for more than 8 hours. Power was restored at around 1pm.

Geoff Cronshaw, 72, who lives on Balmoral Road, Accrington, said the explosion reminded him of New Year's Eve.

He said: “I saw quite a few flashes and thought what the heck is that? I looked out of the window across the road and saw flames and sparks flying in the air. “It died down a bit and then started up again and kept doing that for quite a while.”

He added: “It was quite scary as it was close to our home and it wasn't half crack bang walloping.

“People were out in their pyjamas and dressing gowns wondering what was happening.”

Another resident, who asked not to be named, said she was 'petrified'.

She said: “I was terrified and didn't know what was happening. It was so frightening.

“I hope we never have to experience anything like that ever again.

“It was good that nobody was hurt. If it had happened during the day I would dread to think what could have happened.”

Fire crews were able to control the fire using powder extinguishers.

It took several hours for Electricity North West engineers to cut off power to the box and make the scene safe.

Gary Hargreaves, watch manager at Hyndburn Fire Station, said: "It was found to be well alight on arrival. The fire service set up a safety cordon. If a member of the public discovers a fire involving any sort of electrical equipment they should not approach the incident and immediately request the attendance of emergency services."
