An Accrington firefighter is doing an epic 3,600 mile charity bike ride across America.
Mark Lingard, of Christchurch Street, flew out this week to start his epic coast-to-coast trek.
He starts his journey from Astoria, Oregon, on the west coast of the USA today (Friday, May 28) and is aiming to finish in New York on July 16.
That will see the 51-year-old complete 3,586 miles in just 49 days - which works out at more than 70 miles a day.
Mark said: "I’m looking forward to it in a sick kind of way. I’ve cycled across England coast-to-coast before, but it’s not quite on the same scale."
Mark, who works as a firefighter at Birchwood fire station in Warrington, will be completing the challenge alongside his workmates Tony Sullivan, Matt Hancock and Ray Molyneux.
He said: "Up to now we’ve raised over £8,000 and we hope to raise some more while we’re away.
"I’ve been doing as much bike riding as I can, around 200 miles per week. I don’t know if it’s enough, we’ll find out next week."
The route will take the firefighters through the Rocky mountains, over prairies and across the Great Lakes before finally arriving at the Big Apple. The foursome will be totally self sufficient, carrying all their own gear with no support vehicle and using only pedal power.
They are staying at fire stations all across America on the route.
Mark said: "My family and friends have been very supportive. I’ve had to take all my leave in one go, so I can’t go on holiday with my wife this year. She’s not too happy, but I keep reminding her it’s all in the name of charity."
All proceeds will be going to the Firefighter’s Charity.
