A sensory garden is to be created in Clayton-le-Moors, with a splash of Spanish flair.

The Friends of Mercer Park are soon to realise a 10-year dream – to remodel part of the park along the lines of Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.

The design has been interpreted and will have planted spaces arranged in a flow of organic shapes which will allow multiple journeys around them.

This will create a natural crossroads which then becomes the main focal and social point of the garden. Twelve tall, columnar trees will dominate this space, providing elevation.

The garden – which has been designed for smell, touch, sound and colour – will soon be underway, thanks to funding from The Big Lottery’s Community Spaces Fund, Lancashire Environment Fund and Groundwork UK.

The Friends group is working with Clayton-le-Moors and Altham Community Association and Hyndburn Green Spaces Forum to make the garden a reality.

Rean Blackburn, chairman of Friends of Mercer Park, said: “We wanted to create an individual and high quality sensory garden which will appeal to all the senses and that invites you to both explore and contemplate; fostering a sense of peace and relaxation.”

Coun Susan Haworth said the garden will make a wonderful addition to Mercer Park.

“It will be a haven of peace and relaxation.”
