AN ACCRINGTON man has been fined almost £1,000 for leaving a bag of rubbish outside his house.

Michael Johnson faced magistrates at Hyndburn last week after repeatedly refusing to recycle his waste opting to use black bags instead.

Early this year the 51-year-old of Bradshaw Street West was issued him with a fixed penalty notice for not recycling.

But after repeating the offence in the summer and failing to pay, landing him in court where he was found guilty in his absence.

Mr Johnson was fined £525, ordered to pay a £15 victim surcharge and instructed to hand over £350 in investigation costs and £100 legal costs

Councillor Peter Clarke, cabinet member for environmental issues for Accrington Council said: "Mr Johnson has a long history of not recycling and this final sack of rubbish had certainly turned out to be an expensive one.

"We really cannot have people leaving rubbish in back years and failing to recycle meaning that waste end up in landfill sites. "
