Firefighters have been praised for helping to put up flags for the World War One commemorations.

Maureen Tomlinson, of the Great Harwood Civic Society, said they wanted to place the Union Jack’s along Queen Street in Great Harwood in time for the centenary celebrations.

However when the flags weren’t put up she enlisted the help of local firefighters after spotting them doing a training exercise.

She said: “I mentioned at the recent Community Action Group meeting about the World War One commemorations and that we had a lot of flags in the cellars at Churchfield House.

“Last week I was walking down Queen Street and saw there wasn’t anything up to mark the occasion.

“I saw the fire service doing an exercise in the yard and asked if they could help in putting up the flags.

“They helped put up 32 flags and we have a few more that we still want to put up in the next few weeks

“I’d like to say a great thank you to the fire service for all their help.

“I felt it was really important the flags went up and I’m glad it has been sorted.”

Civic Society chairman Lynn Wilson praised the fire service describing them ‘heroes coming to the rescue’.

Last week dozens of people attended a Light’s Out event at the War Memorial in Memorial Park where 19 yellow balloons were released.

Each balloon had the name of a World War One soldier missing from the cenotaph.

Later this month the Royal British Legion Great Harwood branch will hold a service and parade from Memorial Park to the Towngate.

It will take place on August 23 starting at 11.30am and participants can sing songs during the parade.
