AN OSWALDTWISTLE fireman is to be questioned after a Jackass-style stunt saw a firefighter spinning around in a tumble dryer.
Simon Leyland, of Melrose Avenue, will be quizzed about the images which were filmed on a mobile phone and show a fireman climbing into an industrial sized dryer which is then packed with uniformed clothing and turned on.
As the fireman spins around, the watching officers are heard laughing before the man climbs back out and complains of feeling dizzy.
Senior fire officers have condemned the incident, which they described as dangerous and foolish, and an internal investigation has been launched in which Mr Leyland will be questioned along with eight other shift members who were on duty at the time.
Simon's mum, Jackie, said he was holidaying in Spain until the weekend but as far as she knew the incident was nothing to do with her son.
Firefighter Andy Bruce, 33, who lives in Bury, was filmed climbing into the machine and has admitted he was the person in the video.
He said he was sorry for the stunt and would fully co-operate with the internal investigation.
Councillor Fred Walker, chairman of Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Authority, said: "I am extremely shocked and disappointed that some of our firefighters appear to have behaved in such a reckless manner.
"As a fire authority we take health and safety extremely seriously. This act also sets a very bad example, particularly when a key part of our role is to educate the public on home safety.
"I am aware that the chief has already begun a full internal investigation and we await the outcome."
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that Mr Leyland would face questioning when he returned home.
He said: "I can confirm Simon Leyland is a firefighter at Blackley Fire Station where the incident took place. He will be one of nine watch members who were on shift at the time."
