Cameron Connell who works at Fitzy’s Hair, Beauty and Barber Salon

The first entry has been received for the new title of Mr Carnival at this year’s Accrington Carnival.

The brand new competition which runs alongside the carnival queen and princess contests is open to men aged 18 to 30 who live or work in Hyndburn.

Our first entrant is 19-year-old hairdresser Cameron Connell who works at Fitzy’s Hair, Beauty and Barber Salon in Accrington and lives in Rishton.

His interests are swimming and rock climbing and his ambition is to own his own salon and to become a photographer.

Judging for Mr Carnival will be held at Accrington and Rossendale College on carnival day, June 15.

Prizes include membership at Spa Naturel Fitness at the Dunkenhalgh Hotel and Spa.

The first 10 entrants will be judged by celebrity guest Michelle Keegan.

Entries have now closed for the Carnival princess, following last week’s crowning of new Carnival Queen Kimberley Robinson.

n TWO sponsors have donated £5,000 to this year's Accrington Carnival.

Bosses at Rishton Waste Paper have agreed to contribute £3,000 towards costs for the second carnival in a row, while Millers UK Ltd has pledged £2,000. The Observer revealed last month how soap star Michelle Keegan will be the celebrity guest at the Carnival on Saturday, June 15.

Tracy Simmonds, from the organisers Accrington Lions, said the Coronation Street actress would not be able to take part without the new sponsorship.

BUSINESSES and community groups are being urged to register for an It’s a Knockout competition on carnival day to raise funds for a charity of their choice.

The event will be held on the field at Accrington and Rossendale College on Saturday, June 15.

Teams of 10 can register for the event and use it to raise funds for their own cause or charity.

Registration is £100, £10 per person. For more information or to register call Alicia on 07546 276694 or Tracey on 07971 772168.
