OSWALDTWISTLE now has its first-ever Women's Institute (WI) group, thanks to the efforts of local women.

Plans for the group, which is only the second to be formed in Hyndburn, were given the go-ahead during a meeting last week.

Seven women have so far been nominated as committee members and a further meeting will be held next Wednesday afternoon, when the president, secretary and treasurer are due to be elected.

Moira Cook, an adviser for the Lancashire Federation of Women's Institutes, said that the group had been officially named Oswaldtwistle District WI and it would meet on the first Wednesday of every month. At least 16 women have been involved.

She said: "They are really enthusiastic and it was so nice to see that women of different ages were joining us."

"Some of them didn't know anyone else but they all gelled really quickly. I think it can only go from strength to strength."

Officers from the Lancashire Federation agreed to help set up a group after the borough's other WI, which is based in Great Harwood, became oversubscribed.

The meeting on Wednesday will be held at Rhyddings Methodist Church Hall, starting at 1.30pm. Anyone interested in getting involved - or to be nominated for a position on the committee - should contact Moira on 01772 740700.
