ROYAL Navy fitness instructor Sam Connell, 22, has set his sights on the Mr Gay UK title - a national male beauty contest which is being held later this month.

And, the Great Harwood-born sailor who is based in Plymouth, is asking people from his hometown to vote for him in his bid to win the title and £1,500 cash prize.

Sam is hoping his defined physique will help him cruise to victory, especially as he is missing his brother's wedding to attend the showdown.

Sam, who grew up in Mill Lane, joined the Navy straight after leaving Norden High School, Rishton, and he is now based aboard HMS Raleigh, in Plymouth.

He said: "I've been in the navy for six years since I was 16.

"I only entered the contest when I was out with friends and I got pushed into doing it.

"The heat was like any other beauty contest, I suppose, I had to get on stage in my underwear, talk about myself and try to look as good as possible."

To vote for Sam call 09010 310083 or text voteplymouth to 84211 or vote at www.mrgayuk.co.uk . Calls and texts cost 25p.
