A footballer has pleaded guilty to a serious assault at a 21st birthday party.

Former soldier Steven Mercer, of Chapel Street, Oswaldtwistle pleaded guilty to assaulting Alexander Lee Holt causing actual bodily harm and unlawfully wounding Brian Wakeling.

Mercer, 25, was not invited to the party at Clitheroe Social Club in Wellgate on April 29 but was let in as the party was quiet.

Mr Holt was injured after he was headbutted in the nose by Mercer after he accidentally bumped into the defendant at the bar.

Mr Wakeling then approached Mercer to ask him to leave but before he could say anything he was hit in the face with a glass.

He received four cuts requiring stitches and spent three days in hospital.

Mercer, who plays for Clitheroe FC, was arrested on June 6.

He pleaded guilty at Preston Crown Court and was bailed to reappear on Tuesday, December 20 for sentencing.

As a condition of his bail Mercer is banned from entering Clitheroe except for playing in a football match or training.
