Owners of a fruit and veg shop are celebrating after an incredible 55 years in business.
Couple Katherine and Alan Barnes have run A&K Barnes on Whalley Road, Clayton-le-Moors since March 12, 1960, but admit it ‘doesn’t seem that long ago’.
And Katherine, 76, said they have no plans to retire soon and want to keep going ‘as long as we can’.
She said: “We just love it. We have met a lot of people over the years, it’s been unbelievable.
“People are coming in now who we first knew when they were children. They are all grown up now and have their own families and kids.
“I love coming here every day. Fifty-five years sounds a long time but it doesn’t seem that long.”
The day starts very early for Katherine and 77-year-old Alan, who travels over to the wholesale market in Preston every morning between 4.30am and 6am to collect fresh produce for the shop.
Katherine, formerly of Rising Bridge, said they also run a stock farm near the Bowley Scout Club in Great Harwood and ‘both work very well together’.
The former Boots shop worker said: “When we took over this business it used to be a fish shop and we introduced the grocery part of it.
“We did keep doing the fish for a while but then it faded out.
“We have got some very good and loyal customers and it’s a good job we have them.
“I just love selling and people and I have always been in the retail trade.
“I don’t think we ever thought we would be here as long as we have.
“Alan will tell you I have not grumbled one morning or night since we’ve been here.
“If everybody was as happy with their job as we were it would be a better place.”
Staff at L Champ Funeral Services in Clayton-le-Moors, who use the shop every day, presented flowers to Katherine last week to commemorate the anniversary and to thank them for their ‘dedication’.
Lianna Champ said: “She has so much energy, is always smiling and happy, and brightens up the day of all who shop there.”
Ward councillor Nick Collingridge said it ‘looks like they will go on forever’.
He said: “Kathleen is a really nice lady and is always there for everybody.
“We hope they will go on a lot longer as they are the only true fruit and veg shop in Clayton.”
