School sports teams flew the flag for Hyndburn last week at a county-wide sports competition.

Teams from across the borough took part in the ninth annual SPAR Lancashire School Games at Stanley Park in Blackpool, competing in 14 sports including athletics, handball and rounders.

St Mary’s RC Primary School in Oswaldtwistle took home the gold in the girls’ football finals, following an exciting match against Shakespeare Primary School in Wyre.

Meanwhile, the tag rugby team from Peel Park Primary School took fifth place in their tournament.

Around 1,800 children were involved in the games, with the Ribble Valley team winning the overall competition.

Paralympic fencer Justine Moore and Olympic trampolinist Harry Newbold-Cozens attended the games.

The event was compared by Rock FM DJ Jordan North, with X Factor finalist Jack Walton and Lancashire band Myth of Unity providing entertainment.

Hyndburn games organiser Jane Johnson said: “It was great to see so many children getting involved in school sport and the level of sportsmanship on display was fantastic to see.”
