National Allotments Week came to an Accrington site with a fun Question Time on organic gardening.

Food growers from three allotment sites gathered at Meadoway allotments just off Queen’s Road West to throw tricky questions at two local experts.

People shared their own food growing knowledge, ideas and how much they enjoy being on their allotments.

Interesting historical artefacts were also on view and people were ‘amazed’ to see that the allotment has been in continuous use for nearly a 100 years.

Coun Ken Moss, cabinet member for leisure, urged more people to grow their own. He said: “There are allotment plots of different sizes available now for local people to grow their own food, with small or large spaces to suit individual needs, with a range of facilities available including polytunnels, storage sheds, and a fully accessible toilet.

“Allotments also offer a good opportunity for people with health or mobility needs to build up strength and are a great way to get exercise and fresh air with a great community atmosphere.”
