A GUILT-ridden thief saw the error of their ways when they left an enveloped stuffed with stolen cash at an Accrington church.
The Rev Simon Mansfield, vicar at St James Church in Accrington, received an anonymous phone call from the thief after £400 was snatched from Mannings confectioners in Union Street, Accrington.
But, a few days later the vicar received an anonymous call from the thief wanting to return the cash.
He said: "They told me they had left the money behind the back door at the church. They had pushed it through the letterbox and left it there and wanted it returning. I never saw them, we just spoke on the phone."
He found the cash where the thief said it would be and took it back to the shop on Saturday.
A police spokeswoman confirmed they were aware of the incident and that they were investigating.
