A spate of thefts of gully covers has been reported in Clayton-le-Moors, leaving dangerous holes.
A total of six lids were removed from outside three properties on Charles Street and elsewhere around Mercer Park last weekend.
Highways teams took emergency action on Monday (April 26) and the lids were replaced with new plastic composite covers.
Tim O'Kane, Charles Street resident and local election candidate, said: "A child could easily have been seriously injured, especially as the thieves targeted the Mercer Park area of town. Cars could have sustained damage as well. This sort of thing is both despicable and indiscriminate."
