AN HISTORIC town centre motorbike shop has closed its doors for the last time.
Clarkes of Accrington has long sold motorcycles from its base on Whalley Road and is thought to have been in business for around 50 years.
But the shop, which is a Suzuki dealership, has now closed, leaving nearby traders left baffled.
David Casson, of nearby Vac Services, said: "One minute it was here and the next it had shut down, so we don’t know what happened.
"It is very sad as I believe it has been going for about 50 years.
"It was certainly here when I first came 25 years ago."
Phil Bond, president of the Hyndburn Chamber of Trade, said: "It is very sad for any company to close in this day and age, and it is a sad sign of the times.
"It is also very sad when it is an established firm, like this one.
"It is a blow to the town, not only for the money it generates, but also from an employment point of view."
A spokeswoman for Suzuki confirmed that the shop had closed, but could not supply further details.
No one was available for comment at Clarkes when the Observer visited the premises which were locked up, with a sale sign displayed in the window.
