A HONEYMOON couple have been stranded in Thailand because of anti-government protests.

Accrington cabaret singer Jayne Curry, 30, formerly of Edleston Street, and her new husband, golf professional Steve Parry, 30, flew out to the Thai capital of Bangkok for a luxurious honeymoon.

But their dream turned sour when they were told they could have to stay there for up to a month because of the People’s Alliance for Democracy protesters seizing the international airport.

The protest, which did not end until Wednesday, trapped thousands of foreign travellers and caused a backlog in flights which could take weeks to sort out.

Angela Curry, Jayne’s mum, said: "Steve and Jayne didn’t find out about the protests until I phoned to let them know. It’s a shame because it’s ruined their honeymoon.

"I have been very concerned for their safety but they are both experienced travellers with their jobs, which has helped to reassure us."

Hope is now on the horizon for the couple who arrived in Dubai yesterday morning (Thursday) after flying from a Thai air base.

It is understood they are now waiting for a flight from Dubai to Manchester.

Earlier this week thousands of protesters streamed away from the airport in Bangkok in buses and pick-up trucks, ending the eight-day siege.

The lifting of the blockade in what reports say "looked like a victory parade" came after a court disbanded the governing party and disqualified the prime minister, Somchai Wongsawat, from office for electoral fraud.

The first passenger flight in more than a week arrived in Bangkok on Wednesday, bringing travellers from the resort island of Phuket.

Jayne’s dad Bernard said: "It’s been very worrying, especially with everything that has been going on in Mumbai. They didn’t know what to do for the best. They thought about crossing the border to Cambodia but the Embassy warned against that because of the high risk of being robbed by bandits."

Jayne, a former Rhyddings High School pupil, is a well-established cruiseline singer and was due to fly out to Magaluf tomorrow (Saturday) to join a P&O cruise around Spain.

Mrs Curry said: "It’s looking like she will miss that which is bad because it is a week’s work. I just hope they will be home soon."

The couple, who now live in Bolton, had been in Thailand for three weeks following their wedding at Chorley’s Park Hall Hotel.
