MEMBERS of the Church and Oswaldtwistle British Legion are to vote on whether to merge with the crisis-hit Accrington branch.
As reported in last week's Observer, the branch in the town which produced the Accrington Pals - one of Britain's best-known and bravest battalions - could face closure due to dwindling membership and a lack of volunteers willing to take on the roles of branch officers.
And at a committee meeting of the Church and Oswaldtwistle branch on Monday evening, it was revealed that since then, hardly anyone had come forward to help out.
The group, which currently has just 35 members, needs a secretary and a treasurer if it is to survive.
Roy Lockwood, vice-chairman of the Church and Oswaldtwistle branch, said: "Due to the lack of interest from Accrington, it looks as if we're going to have to take it on as a sub-branch. But before we can make it official, there has to be a full members' meeting of our branch, and that will be held on 5 March.
"We are a little apprehensive as it is a bigger branch and there will be a lot more work involved. It is disappointing that nobody has come forward, as the potential in Accrington is massive."
Mr Lockwood added that the Accrington branch had been given the support of businessman Ray Pilking-ton, who runs the Accrington Pride pub on Blackburn Road.
Mr Pilkington is planning to set up a wall dedicated to the Accrington Pals, and he has also offered the group the use of a room for committee meetings.
He said: "We already have some memorabilia of the Accrington Pals, and when we saw that the British Legion branch could be folding, we thought that maybe we could put any other memorabilia they have here at the pub.
"They need a committee to ensure that it doesn't fold, and as an ex-serviceman myself, I would like to give them the use of a room. They just need the volunteers now."
There will be a drop-in session at Elmfield Hall, Gatty Park on Tuesday 21 January, between 1pm and 3pm, and anyone who is interested in helping out with the Accrington branch is welcome to attend.
