HUMAN shield Dieter Seager has returned to England after a three-week stay in the Middle East.

Dieter, 28, of Washington Street, Accrington, flew out to Jordan in February as part of Operation Human Shield, an anti-war protest to stop the bombing of Baghdad.

During his time in Amman, the capital of Jordan, he helped to set up Internet connections for the Iraqi and Jordanian peace corps and planned to travel into Iraq to deliver supplies and protect civilians at schools and hospitals.

But despite insisting that he would not leave until the war was stopped, he returned on Wednesday to London, where he will continue his peace work.

His mother, Jean Seager, of Clarence Road, Accrington, said: "As I understand it, they were asked to defend power stations and oil wells and they refused.

"They all met back in Jordan and had many discussions and they decided that the best thing they could do was work from here.

"What they wanted to do was protect the people at the hospitals and schools - not be used by Saddam Hussein."

Jean added that she thought Dieter did travel into Iraq during the weekend to deliver supplies.

She said: "I last spoke to him a few days ago and I think he went to Iraq over the weekend but I'm not entirely sure. Things were changing every minute.

"But he is still working for the peace movement, giving technical support as that is where his skills lie. I don't know whether he is going on anywhere from London."

Dieter could not be contacted for comment.
