Around 200 people attended the annual ‘Crying of the Fair’ and charity market in Great Harwood.

Hyndburn Mayor Coun Marlene Haworth joined with other borough dignitaries and community leaders for the annual ‘Crying of the Fair’ tradition on the Towngate last Friday.

The Mayor was also among visitors to flock to the charity fair organised by the Great Harwood Civic Society, the following day.

Local faith, voluntary and community groups set up stalls on the Towngate to raise funds, which included a variety of goods and games.

Peter Holden, of the Civic Society, said both events were a big success.

He said: “The Mayor attended both events in Great Harwood at the weekend. On Friday she accompanied the Town Crier, Rawden Kerr, as he ‘Cried the Fair’, a tradition that commemorates the day when Edward III granted charter rights to the town as a thank you for Adam Nowell’s help in the fight with the Scots.

“On Saturday she helped open the charity fair on the Town Hall Square when several local charities had the opportunity to raise money for their organisations at the same publicising the good work they do in the local area.”
