HYNDBURN MP Greg Pope spoke of his "disappointment" this week at Gordon Brown's decision not to call a General Election this Autumn.

Labour MP Mr Pope, 47, has represented Hyndburn since 1992 after defeating Tory stalwart Ken Hargreaves.

He said: "I was disappointed as I was all geared up and ready to fight the election and we had even got the posters down at the printers ready to be done.

"Having said that, I will now go back to doing what I was elected to do, namely helping the people of Hyndburn in any way I can."

When approached by the Observer last month, Hyndburn's Conservative and Liberal Parties as well as the Green Party and BNP said they had yet to choose a candidate for a General Election.

But Mr Pope said that was not a problem in Labour's case as he had already been chosen to fight the next election several months ago.

He added: "I was looking forward to it as all three main political parties have obviously changed leaders since the last one and there have been some big changes in Government."
