The front of a lorry caught fire yesterday on the A56, near to the Rising Bridge roundabout.
The driver heard a bang underneath the carriage and pulled over into the lay-by shortly after 6pm.
Moments later the wagon caught fire so the driver got out and phoned for help.
Firefighter Rob Harvey said crews from Rawtenstall and Hyndburn were sent to the scene.
He said: "The fire started because of an electrical fault. The driver did the right thing by pulling over and we then used foam to put the flames out quickly."
