A lorry overturned on the M65 causing traffic chaos on Friday.

Police had pursued a Foden HGV in Padiham but called off the chase when the lorry reached the slip road at junction eight of the motorway, near Accrington.

After three miles travelling eastbound the 23-year-old driver lost control and the vehicle tipped over at 11.20am.

He got out of the vehicle but was caught by police officers as he ran up the motorway embankment.

A police spokeswoman said: "At around 11:15am on Friday, December 16, the wagon was spotted in Padiham and identified as stolen, it failed to stop and there was a pursuit through Padiham. It was a Foden HGV believed to have been stolen from the Humberside area. As the vehicle reached the motorway at junction 8 the pursuit was called off

"At 11.20am on the M65 just before junction 10 the vehicle lost control and tipped over."

The road was closed for around two hours to allow for the vehicle to be recovered.

A 23 year old man from Accrington was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, driving a motor vehicle dangerously and failing to stop. He received hospital treatment for a hip injury nad has since been bailed.

A 60-year-old man from Darwen was also been arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods.

He was not travelling in the lorry when it crashed and has also been released on bail.
