HYNDBURN councillor Malcolm Pritchard shows off his annual expenses - just £1.

The Labour member for Milnshaw ward said he was honouring a pledge to voters not to claim allowances if he was elected.

He decided to claim a pound because otherwise his name would not have been included in the published list.

But he has now dropped the coin in a charity box.

Councillor Pritchard, of Moss Hall Road, Accrington, said: "Before I was first elected in 2002 I always said I would never claim any council expenses and I have always stuck to my word.

"I have nothing at all against members who do claim and I agree with the new specialist responsibilities allowances. I think we get peanuts for the work we do but expenses are just not for me.

"Even if I was lucky enough to be elected Mayor one day I would not claim the Mayoral allowance."

Council leader Peter Britcliffe was the highest claimant during the year 2006-2007, racking up expenses of £22,565.

He said: "Councillor Pritchard has his own reasons for not claiming expenses.

"The allowances we receive are in line with the average wages which most people get and are based on the amount of time we put in.

"They also include claims for things like travelling outside the borough, for example if members have to go to London for courses. I have been there three times in the past year."
