A man suffered burns to his body after setting himself on fire accidentally while burning garden rubbish yesterday.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, spilled some petrol which resulted in the waste fire catching him.

He ran inside and used his shower to extinguish the flames before firefighters arrived and gave the man first aid and oxygen.

He was later taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital for a check-up.

Hyndburn crew manager Alex Fletcher said: "It shows you the dangers of using things that are flammable. You should never use petrol to start fires in your garden."

The incident occurred in the back garden of a property on Plantation Road, Accrington at 3.30pm on Sunday.
