Work on a multimillion pound bus station which will ‘transform’ the town centre got going this week.

The £6.4m bus station, which will be located on the site of Crawshaw Street car park, is part of the £40m Pennine Reach Scheme to improve transport links between Hyndburn and Blackburn.

County Councillor John Fillis, Lancashire County Council cabinet member for highways and transport and Coun Miles Parkinson, leader of Hyndburn council, officially launched the project at a ‘ground breaking’ ceremony on Monday, February 2.

County Councillor Fillis said: “This new, modern, bus station will be a much-needed improvement on the current bus station at Peel Street with easy access for people with disabilities.

Council leader Parkinson added: “This is one of the major investments being made in Accrington town centre with other schemes to be programmed shortly to compliment this investment to improve facilities in Accrington town centre.”

The bus station relocation was approved last year by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government following a two-day public inquiry last June.

Campaigners collected a 300-name petition against the scheme, claiming it would hit the town centre and parking.

The building work on the bus station is expected to last for around 15 months.
