A young mum tragically died in hospital less than 24 hours after being admitted with a bad cough, an inquest heard.
Julie Lomax, of Brunswick Terrace, Accrington, died on March 16 in the medical assessment unit at Royal Blackburn Hospital.
The 35-year-old mum-of-one arrived at the hospital’s A&E department the day before with a productive cough, Blackburn Coroner’s Court heard.
But doctors discovered that Julie, who had previously had heart surgery, was seriously ill and she died from septicaemia due to infective endocarditis.
After the hearing, her mum May Lomax paid tribute to Julie.
She said: “She would give anybody anything and help anyone out.
“She was a good person and her son absolutely adored her. She was a great mum.
“She liked to go nightclubbing and had a lot of friends. She was one of those people who everybody knew.”
Coroner Michael Singleton told the inquest Julie had a fever, was shivering and sweating and had a bad chest.
Miss Lomax was given intravenous antibiotics. However she failed to respond.
Mr Singleton told the inquest she later collapsed and died.
The hearing was told how Miss Lomax had heart surgery in 2009 and 2011 for infective endocarditis, which affects the heart valves.
In a statement read out in court, pathologist Dr Mohammed Aslam said a post-mortem showed features of ‘severe infective endocarditis’.
He said: “The vegetation involving the mitral valve was massive and was causing significant narrowing of the valve opening.
“Blood tests taken showed the presence of streptococcal borealis, which is a micro-organism in the blood stream, and toxicological analysis showed no drug toxicity.”
Mr Singleton recorded a verdict of a natural death.
He said: “The pathologist has not suggested any adverse reaction to the antibiotics.
“She was very, very ill when she went into hospital.
“I am satisfied that is a natural cause of death, and that’s what will be recorded.”
Julie moved to Accrington seven years ago when her son Taylor was born.
Originally from Leyland, she attended Wellfield School before moving to Blackburn 12 years ago.
