A mum is taking part in a charity walk in memory of her friend and former colleague.
Maria Meadowcroft, 51 and her daughter Natasha, 21, who live in Oswaldtwistle, will be setting off with friends and hundreds of other ladies to raise money for East Lancashire Hospice on the Strictly Starlight Walk on June 28.
The event will be very poignant for Maria, who is taking part in memory of her colleague and friend Jackie, who died in the hospice in February aged 49.
Maria said: “I worked with Jackie at a local school for eight years and during that time a group of us became friends.
“Jackie moved away to another school but we stayed in touch. When we heard that she was poorly and had gone into the hospice we were all surprised and shocked.
“But we knew she’d be well looked after. Jackie was a happy, friendly person, she was so easy to get on with.”
Maria said that after receiving treatment for breast cancer in her home town of Stockport, her experience had opened her eyes to the support available to patients and their families.
A group made up of Jackie’s former colleagues will be putting on their trainers and set of for the five or eight-mile Strictly Starlight Walk in memory of their friend.
Maria said they’re doing the walk as a thank you to the hospice for the support they gave Jackie.
She said: “Now I’ve someone to walk in memory of, it will mean more. I think I will find it more emotional walking past the hospice because it could be any one of us who needs hospice support in the future.”
