MAGISTRATES have warned a man he could face jail after thousands of fake DVDs, including hard-core porn films, were seized from his house.

Colin Bonsall, 52, of Hood Street, Accrington, was arrested by police following a raid on 28 March last year which saw a total of nearly 4,000 copied films seized.

These included 2,042 ordinary feature films, including Hollywood blockbusters, as well as 1,836 pornographic movies, some of which were described as hard-core and explicit.

Hyndburn magistrates heard that the home of his ex-wife in Downham Drive, Accrington, was also raided and more goods uncovered.

The operation was descr-ibed as sophisticated and highly-organised.

Bonsall appeared in court charged with one count of possessing computer equipment to copy trademark labels for DVDs.

He was also charged with a further six offences relating to the packaging of counterfeit DVDs as well as four charges of producing counterfeit video tapes and DVDs.

Bonsall, who appeared in court wearing a black leather jacket and jeans, looked nervous as the charges were read out. He pleaded guilty to all matters.

Nicholas McNamara, prosecuting for Lancashire Trading Standards, said: "Mr Bonsall was in a different league from the small-scale pirates we deal with who trade on market stalls and car boot sales.

"He was running a large--scale operation with clients all over the UK and even overseas buying through the Internet."

Mr McNamara said there was meticulous cataloguing of the titles.

Mr Graeme Parkinson, defending, said Bonsall worked at Hansons Clay Products in Altham and was on a low income.

He had got into financial problems with his mortgage and had decided to sell the fake DVDs to boost his finances.

The chairman of the Bench said: "It is clear this was a very sophisticated operation which went on for a long time. The deception to the public was considerable."

He went on to say that Bonsall was facing either a high-level community sentence or imprisonment for his offences.

The case has been adjourned until 4 July for a pre-sentence report and Bonsall was granted unconditional bail.
