NEW Year’s Eve partygoers were left in the dark as a power cut affected hundreds of homes.

A fault with an underground cable at a substation in Altham plunged 1,556 homes in Huncoat, Altham, Clayton-le-Moors and Simonstone into darkness shortly after midnight.

United Utilities engineers restored power to most of the properties by 5am but nine commercial units in Altham were still without power until late afternoon on New Years day.

Polly Rourke from United Utilities said: "We are very sorry to people who lost their power on New Year’s Day. Our engineers responded quickly to restore electricity supplies but we appreciate how inconvenient it must have been for people."

Repairs were delayed as permission to access the land had to be granted by the landowner.
