Our next picture shows nurses who had completed their training at Accrington Victoria Hospital being honoured.

It was taken in 1971 and the awards were presented by Mr Wooley who was  chairman of the hospital at the time.

Garth says new recruits turned up every 12 months.

He said: “There was a nurses home there and they’d come from all over, even Ireland, to train there.

“I think there were about 24 at a time.”

Pictured on the right of the middle row is matron Miss Ellison and on the far left is mayor Alan Benson.
