An Edwardian parish magazine was discovered hidden behind furniture in a church.
Wardens at St John’s CE Church found the magazine, dated from 1904, which had slipped between furniture in the Baxenden church. It has now been published on their website.
Roger Longworth said he and colleague John Massey, who found the magazine, were surprised to unearth a piece of local history.
He said: “They had the same problems that we have now. I don’t know what that says about us.
“It’s not as professionally done as the magazines we have now and it seems to cover the whole area, not just Baxenden.”
Among the topics covered in the August magazine is a piece bemoaning untidy graves in the churchyard.
It says: “Many persons were very much shocked on the day of the school anniversary to find so many untidy graves in the churchyard.
“People passing in tramcars have been heard to speak of its untidy appearance.”
There are also dates for weekly services and Holy Communions, marriages, baptisms and burials and plans for a harvest festival and choir picnic. Roger added that if anyone had any other old parish magazines, the church would love to add them to their online archive on the website.
