Firefighters believe arsonists may have targetted an elderly nursing home.

The extension of Springhill Care Home – currently being built – was reported as alight on Sunday.

John Taylor, of Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "The fire affected the roof. Fortunately the alarm was raised before it had taken hold in a serious way. Two square metres of the roof timber was severely damaged.

"Crews were there quickly and extinguished it quickly. We are definitely considering that it might be deliberate."

Nine firefighters from Hyndburn Fire Station tackled the fire at around 3.40pm on Sunday, May 29.
