A PENSIONER was killed when he was in collision with a van while crossing the road.

Thomas Wilkinson, 83, of Woodfield Avenue, Accrington, was walking across Manchester Road, Baxenden, near the Alma Inn, when the accident occurred around 9.20 on Monday evening.

The main road was closed for four hours as police launched an investigation.

They later said a 33-year-old van driver had been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The vehicle was travelling from Accrington towards Baxenden and it is believed Mr Wilkinson was attempting to cross the road from the nearside of the Citroen Relay van.

An ambulance took Mr Wilkinson to the Royal Blackburn Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

His devastated wife Anne paid tribute to him, saying: "He was a lovely, lovely man.

"He was a Manchester United supporter and for his birthday the family took him to Old Trafford for the day."

She said Mr Wilkinson was a devoted father and grandfather.

She added: "It was a real shock but people are coming in and out and keeping me company."

Several people were inside the Alma Inn when the incident occurred.

Landlord Keith Simpson said Mr Wilkinson’s death was keenly felt by many of the pub’s regulars.

He said: "It was all a major shock. Everyone was upset to hear what had happened. He came in here quite regularly. He was very nice and friendly and always well dressed."
