THE Observer has been officially named as runner-up in the annual BNFL North West Newspaper Awards.
Your favourite newspaper beat off competition from many other titles to be shortlisted in the category for Best Weekly Newspaper.
The judging panel included editors and senior journalists who were shown three editions of the Observer featuring our extensive coverage of the tragic house fire in Accrington in which six members of the Riaz family were killed.
The Cumberland News scooped first place and received a glass trophy at the ceremony which was held at the Radisson SAS Hotel at Manchester Airport.
Observer editor Mervyn Kay said: "This has very much been a team effort and is recognition of the quality newspaper that we produce every week.
"Our rising circulation also indicates our readers' appreciation of such a high standard of local news reporting and is a tribute to my talented and hard-working staff."
