A couple are celebrating 70 years of married life.

Mildred and Arthur Abbott, from Aspen Lane in Oswaldtwistle, marked their platinum wedding anniversary surrounded by family and friends.

Their daughter Elaine said they met through Arthur’s sister Lily.

She said: “He was going away to serve in Palestine in the Army and then they decided to get married.”

The couple, who are originally from Blackburn, married at St Mary’s Catholic Church in the town on August 4, 1945.

Arthur, 89, worked as a maintenance fitter for North Rop in Blackburn and Mildred, 91, worked at the Royal Ordnance Factory making ammunitions.

Elaine said: “My dad moved to Mullard after North Rop shut down and he retired from there.

“My mum also worked at Rist wires and cables in Accrington, which was a well known factory.

“She retired from the West End School as a dinner lady.”

The couple have four children, Elaine, David, Annette and Carolyn, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Elaine added: “I asked my dad how they had stayed together for so long and he said ‘I always give your mum a kiss in the morning and at night.”’
