A charity worker believed to be East Lancashire’s oldest woman has celebrated her 107th birthday.

Alice Horne, of Union Road, Oswaldtwistle, was joined by friends, family and councillors to mark the her day on Thursday, February 6.

Alice, who is originally from Scotland, was named Britain’s most active pensioner back in 1986 after learning to swim at the age of 70. She also took part in javelin, bowling and darts.

The pensioner, who was bestowed the Freedom of the Borough in 2005, celebrated with balloons, a card from the Queen, and a Belgian chocolate cake.

Friend Irene Barnes, said: “It’s a great age. Her hearing and sight are not brilliant but she’s really mentally alert. She’s such a positive person.”

Oswaldtwistle councillor Peter Britcliffe said: “I’m quite sure Alice must be in record-setting territory for being the oldest Freeman of the Borough.”
