Lily Gaskell celebrated her 100th birthday with a party on Friday, June 12, at Church View Residential Home.

Lily was treated to a performance of ‘Golden Oldies’ ranging from music hall numbers to 60s classics.

She was also presented with flowers and a card from the Queen by the Mayor Coun Marlene Haworth.

Emma Hine, the Church View manager, said: “She had a really good day.

“Her family came up and she got lots of presents and flowers.”

Coun Haworth said: “Lily is a wonderful lady and I was really overjoyed to be able to take part and share in her 100th birthday.”

Lily, who worked for the fire service during the Second World War, lived most of her life in the bungalow where she was born in Oswaldtwistle with husband Thomas, who passed away in 2005.

After the war Lily worked as an administrative clerk for the NHS until she retired. Remarkably, she bowled regularly until her 96th birthday.

Nephew Fred Stuart, 64, said: “She always enjoyed being very active when she was younger.

“She used to regularly just get on a bus and go all over the place until she was 97 or 98. She’s a terrific lady.”
